Vale, One of ACCA's founding fathers Mr Yick Chong Louie, MBE

Friday, 3 June 2022

The directors of ACCA, along with the entire Australian Chinese community are deeply saddened by the loss of one of ACCA’s founding fathers, Mr Yick Chong Louie, MBE.

Mr Yick Chong Louie, MBE, has always been held in high regard as one of ACCA’s founding fathers, being instrumental in its formation in 1974 and having the honour of becoming ACCA’s third president in 1978, serving until 1981.

In 1978, in recognition to his services to the Chinese community, Mr Louie was awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE).

In 1980, Mr Louie, was instrumental in obtaining grant funding to employ a social welfare worker, significant as it was the first time that the Grant-in-Aid Scheme was allocated to an Asian organisation.

It has been long regarded that one of Mr Louie’s greatest achievements on behalf of ACCA and the Chinese Community, was the instigation of the Chinese Garden Project in Darling Harbour. He was fundamental in convincing the State Government that a Chinese Garden was not only an important development for Sydney, but essential in recognising the contribution the Chinese Community had made to Australian society.

The Board of Directors on behalf of the Australian Chinese Community Association, wish to convey their sincere condolences to the family of Mr Louie, pay their respects and thank Mr Louie for his dedication, commitment and contribution to the Australian Chinese Community.
